The theme for the 2018 International Men’s Day is ‘Positive Male Role Models’.
But back to the International Men’s Day – despite the existence of the celebration over the past two decades, there are many who don’t realise that the day exists. They know about the International Women’s Day which takes place on 8th of March because the women mark the day with pomp and circumstance.
In using the International Men’s Day to celebrate positive male role models and to raise awareness of men’s issues, we are able to focus on topics such as mental health, toxic masculinity and reduction of male suicide cases.
International Men’s Day encourages men to teach the boys in their lives the values, character and responsibilities of being a man.
For all men out there, look around you for boys and young men to influence positively, starting with your sons, nephews, cousins, school boys around and kids on the block.
And for the women – wives, daughters, nieces, etc – celebrate those men in your lives today like you’ve never done before. No nagging. No quarrels! No fighting. Just give them a good time to savour.
Appreciate them not just because they are bread winners and providers, but because they are men and they can do more for the family, community, nation and the world with your support, encouragement and dedication to their cause to impact the boys positively.
Even where the woman is the bread winner and the man is a house husband, give him due respect and the courage to bounce back when things are tough.
Happy International Men’s Day!
